This first picture has a very creative storage solution: the barn door.  I've seen larger ones used to hide laundry facilities, but this is the first I've seen of one used for a pantry.  Of course the color helps :)

Backsplashes are your chance to really define your kitchen.  You can show your style, and pretty inexpensivly, if you do it yourself. You can't go wrong with glass piano tile:
